We have Gallery 3 beta 2 installed here:

http://dpnow.com/gallery3/

At present I have some instability with being logged in. I frequemtly see the login prompt meaning I am no longer logged in - seems like it could be a cookie issue?

I have a warning about the exif index, but exif data extraction is not working. Is jhead used? I can't see how to configure this? I do have Image Magick installed and configured.

The drop dowm menus, when they overlap with image icons, get lost.

Can anyone help?

Maybe it would be a good idea to mention on the Beta 2 page that there are later builds available?

Secondly, although I'm fortunate in that I have a Linux expert at hand, the instructions are hopeless for semi-technical folk like me. WHERE do you unpack the upgrade? What about the CONFIG file? Etc.

semantics I know, but B2 is the latest "build", to get the current code you are just pulling code straight out of the repository right now.

This page mentions nothing about a config file:
http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery3:Upgrading

It's pretty step-by-step on what to do.

Quote:
* If you're using an official release, it unpacks into a directory called gallery3. So if you've named your directory gallery3 also, you can just unpack the new version over the old version. If you named your directory something else, you can unpack the new zip file somewhere else and just move the "var" directory from the old install to the new one, then rename your directories until they're right for you.

* If you're using an experimental version, you'll see that it unpacks into a directory with a long and weird name. That name tells you exactly which version you downloaded and while that's useful for discussing in the forums, it's probably not relevant to you. So just move the "var" directory over from the old install and rename directories until you're happy.

Everything is explained.

Please let us know specifically the part you had trouble with. Perhpas it is simple wording change. You can fix it or we can fix if you let us know what part needs addressing. Docs are for users by users.

Remember this is beta software and the readme says:
'The intended audience of this release is folks who are willing to live a little bit on the edge.'

Thanks for the more level headed response :) I've just sent you a PM about that other issue.

We have installed the latest experimental update. The drop down menus work properly now and it seems more stable, but exif extraction still doesn't work (it starts up but then gets stuck without any images being processed) and a new problem has appeared causing much of the gallery contents to be squashed up on the right side.

The key problems I found with the upgrade installation instructions were: where do you unpack to (offline on a PC or online to the server and, if so, where on the server?). Also, more explanation about the var folder should be given. I can update vBulletin forums and PhotoPost galleries, neither of which claim to be easy to install, but the instructions given to install gallery 3 are far too simplistic if you ask me.

The problem with the gallery being squashed up to one side of the browser is an IE8 issue, fixed by clicking the compatibility button.

Ian,
Thanks for that but if you could tell me the specific wording that needs to be changed I can help as it all makes sense to me.

More IE8 fixes are in the works the UI team is working on that.

The instructions there are preliminary, written by me one evening. Now that you understand what's going on, please feel free to edit the wiki and improve them, or suggest improvements here. I'm not a tech writer.
