more supported file types?

I know there's a patch that allows to add additional file types (haven't tried yet if it works with e.g. v1.4.1-cvs-b64). However, I am wondering if it could be possible to introduce a feature that allowed to add new file types via the configuration panel? Or maybe generally add .wav and .mp3? I am unsure why there's .avi and mp4 support, but those two file types are missing (AFAIK most cameras that allow to record sound files, usually use .wav). I think it's fun if you can directly add short sound snippets to the gallery.
