The following information is required to get an answer:
Get this information from the PHP diagnostic (in the configuration wizard).
Gallery URL (optional but very useful): http://gallery.opalcat.com/
Gallery version: 1.5.7
Apache version:
PHP version (don't just say PHP 4, please): the most recent. I am with Hostmonster.com
Graphics Toolkit: ImageMagick
Operating system: some flavor of Linux
Web browser/version (if applicable): all of them

For a while I had this weird album that appeared three times. All three thumbnails linked to the same url and the same gallery--the comments and view counts were the same, etc. That gallery was my 'current art book' gallery and since I just made a new art book, it was time to make a new one to replace that one anyway. So I made the new one and deleted the old one, figuring all three would go away.

Except they didn't. Now I have two that don't exist but show up anyway, with "No highlight" as the name and an error that they don't exist when you click on them. I talked to my programmer ex-husband about it and here is what he said : "What I did to try to clean up the Art page was to directly edit Art/photos.dat to remove what appeared to be the records for the 2 non-existent galleries. But that didn't seem to change the appearance of the page at all. "

Now nothing shows up in the parent directory at all: none of the subdirectories show up, only the image that I uploaded as a thumbnail remains to show that it isn't an empty directory!

I would love to upgrade to Gallery 2 but I have tried several times and I just can't wade through the template code to make it match my website layout. :(

G3 is much easier to work with. If you know HTML, you should be able to get that working. However, to go from G1 to G3, you'd have to go to G2 first and then import to G3.

Do you have a backup of your Art/photos.dat file before you edited it?

Yeah he kept a backup.

G3 is easier to template, huh? I mean I could upgrade my gallery to 2 with the default template, then to 3 and implement the template... I know HTML inside and out.

I'll install G3 on a dummy site and see if I can do it. Thanks for the tip!

Yep, that's exactly what you can do. And you're on bluehost so I don't think you should have any problems running G3.

Minimum requirements for G3 are:
Apache 2.2
MySQL 5.x
PHP 5.2.3
Linux

If you go for G3, grab the latest experimental code as there have been major changes to CSS and other portions since B3 was released. You can use the links and information here to get the latest code:

Ok I still don't get it. I look at the themes and it's all php coding. I looked at the info here: http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery3:Themes#Overview_-_what_is_a_theme_-_what_a_theme_does_and_what_it_doesn.27t_do._Reference_overarching_G3_overview_doc. and it's gibberish to me. I'm not a programmer, I'm an artist.

That page mentions "insertion points" where I can put my own html, but I don't understand how to implement that. I see the tags, like "<?= $theme->page_top() ?>" but I don't understand how to make that put my header HTML there.

I'm also really worried about the CSS. My site's layout is fairly complex css and I'm worried that I won't be able to merge the two css sheets without taking 6 months to do it.

I'm starting to think I'm stuck with Gallery 1 for the rest of eternity. :(

Yes, there is php laced through out the template pages in G3, but you can change the look and feel by just the HTML. But yes, right now until G3 has an "embedded mode" I think integrating your CSS is going to be a big pain. But I'm not a designer so maybe it's easier for someone who knows CSS.

Another option I just thought about. You might be able to get G2 to look how you want pretty easily:
http://www.flashyourweb.com/staticpages/index.php?page=gallery2_embed-o-rator

But we never did get that album fixed :)

If you have a backup of that photos.dat file, restore it (keep a backup of the current one) and see if that gets you back to mostly working. If it does, then we should be able to get this fixed.

Opalcat, do you still have the "ghost galleries" issue?

If yes, i'd be glad to help, but unfortunately i could not find the ghosts..

Unfortunately now the Art folder appears totally empty, though it should contain about a dozen sub-albums. This is where the ghost galleries were, and this is what happened when we restored the backed up copy of that file. The ghost galleries went away, and they took everything else with them!
