hello all,

based on 1AND1's issues with G3, do you have a suggestion on the better hosts i may look into? there are hundreds out there!

BTW: 1AND1 asked me what is required for Gallery3 so they MAY be considering up-grading Apache v1 to v2! if many G3 users with 1AND1 request it they may upgrade sooner than later???

BTW: is there a host that offers both LINUX/UNIX and a MS/Windows based servers in the same plan?

thanks,
billy

1AND1's technical documentation and manuals is the best i've seen, that is tehre big plus i think.

Their customer service is worse than dreadful - absolutely hair-pullingly disgusting. I wouldn't touch them again with a barge-pole.

I found 1&1 had issues with a lot of things. Try Liquidweb if you want a serious, serious host - a bit pricey. But there's no shortage of good hosts. I used to use Westhost and know others who still do, happily.

I had loads of problems with 1&1, not least of which was their misleading advertising on deals and such. I don't consider a software package "free" if you have to give it up when you drop your account.

Had no big issues with Linux hosting for last 6 years...
Had no issues with hosting of email, web, WP, G2/G3, other PHP/MySQL based solutions.

You need to know the tools you use... other then that... fine and in my price range...

Here's my opinion:

I've never seen a host that offers Linux and Windows in the same plan. You'd have an account on 2 different servers, it's not financially beneficial for any host do to this. Why Windows?

If you're going to do VPS, go with Linode. Their support is top notch. But you're going to need to learn how to setup and configure all the software that runs the server too....

But you shouldn't need that. Pair or iThought for shared hosting really kicks arse. I currently use and have used Pair for the last almost 7 years. I know the person running iThought and he really knows what the heck he's doing. It is a bit of a no-frills host though, you're still going to need to be comfortable working on the command line. Either way, support and customer service are top notch at the few hosts I know and recommend:

Pair (I have personal experience here as I'm currently using them)
Linode (I have personal experience here as I'm currently using them)
iThought

I'm not 100% sure about SliceHost, just heard really good things about them. I choose Linode over them because of a variety of reasons.

I'm running Gallery 3 on the following platform without any problems:

Apache version 1.3.41 (Unix)
PHP version 5.2.6
MySQL version 5.0.81-community
Architecture x86_64
Operating system Linux

This is on a Shared hosting plan with Surpass Hosting. I think all the new servers start out with Apache v2. They've been slowly upgrading older servers to Apache v2

Thanks,
Mark H.

I use hostmonster and other than not allowing ffmpeg to be installed on their boxes, they're ok in my book...I am also a PREVIOUS 1&1 customer and absolutely hated their service.

No and no.

Apache 1.3 is not supported. If it works, fine. If it doesn't or you run into problems, you're not going to get any support other than "Find a decent host who cares about customer support, satisfaction, is competent and cares about security"

Good luck loosing low-end crappy hosts.

@nivekiam: you do have a big teeth against 1and1 :)
@grievousangel: I did have problem in the past going from one beta to another. There was something about DB changes which did not carry over properly.
I have had import from G2 again and it was working fine after that

I don't think we do. We are just tired of trying to give support to users who have hosts that make it very difficult to support. Time and time again we go through hoops and we are just taking a stand now.
We simply don't have the time or patience anymore to waste time and resources on this issue when our time-limited, valuable, volunteer, free effort can be spent supporting others.

I have big teeth against 1and1. Their cretinous attitude cost me $$$. This wasn't with one of their cheap packages, either. It was with an expensive, multi-domain business package.

If they go out of business tomorrow, it won't be a day too soon.
