Hi all,

I been running Gallery 2 on my site for over a year. I just noticed that Gallery 3 is out. Should I switch to it?

How different is Gallery 3 from Gallery 2?

Thanks

Very different. It's a different product. They serve the same purpose, but if you use some of the more advanced functionality of G2, it's not there in G3 yet and depending on what you're using in G2 it may never be there.

G3's permission system is much more simplified and not as complicated or granular as G2's.

If you're using photo printing services in G2, there is only one available in G3 and there are out-standing issues with it.

If you're using any sort of shopping cart in G2, there is only a rudimentary one available for G3 and I don't even know if it's currently working with the latest code.

G3 is still in Beta and being working on nearly daily. There are known and unknown bugs. If you like living on the edge, please install it and test it out and help us get the bugs found and worked out. I did see a post by a dev the other day that it's looking like an RC might be available in a couple weeks, but a final release is still aways off.

If you're just using G2 to host photos, G3 should be fine for you but I still wouldn't use it on a production site just yet. Check the system requirements and read up more about G3 at these links:

Download the latest code here:

There is a G2 Import module included that allows you to import G2 photos, comments, users, etc.

In the end it's up to you. Install it, test it, play with it.

Thanks for the reply Nivekiam!

Well, the reason I started this thread is because I am currently using G2 on my site:
http://www.asianadventures.org/gallery2/main.php . It is only used for basic stuff such as uploading photos. Although I would eventually like users to upload their photos too. So being user-friendly is a priority. Having mentioned that, I think I am going to stick to G2 for now. If you have any other suggestions please let me know. Thanks

G3 is much more user friendly, but depending on how you want to set things up the permission system might not work out for you. I expect that to change as someone can and probably will create a module to add more advanced and complex functionality.
