Have "succeeded" in the migration to Gallery 2 and all was working to install albums, though I could only do a small amount of pics at one time. Thought maybe would work better in Firefox than IE - tried and now I get the following error

Just found that the plugins page is not displaying either. (another post said to remove jtrans plug in for similar problem and that's how I discovered this problem) All as functioning when I completed the install - it started breaking on the migration

About the plugins page; Is it totally blank? If so, you probably need to increase memory, this link explains how, try 32MB:

I know what happened on the install window - I screwed up the config file!!! Dang. Can I go through the installation again even though I have items installed in the albums folder? or do I need to start over 100% - this is gotten to be a big mess! thanks for any help

Sorry for so many guick posts - my config file is still correct but I am getting the install window. So now my question is, can I reinstall from this point or do I have to reupload the entire gallery package again - and do I need to delete the database to start over?

I don't see anything that's sticking out in phpinfo, but "Internet Names for Business". I've never considered them a professional quality host. I've only ever seen them as and considered them as a leech that sucks off of business owners who don't know about other options.
There's something happening on the server. Files are either getting deleted or permissions are getting reset or something or config.php got modified and lost connection info to the DB. But if you are seeing a the installer page and not the upgrade page, then Gallery doesn't think it's been installed there.
Toolkit Failure typically indicates either the binaries don't exist (you can test them under Site Admin > NetPBM or ImageMagick depending on which toolkit you are using) or they are failing on the file they are processing for what ever reason.
If/once you get the install issue worked out. Try uninstalling all image toolkits except for GD (since you have 128M of memory available to PHP) and let's see if you can get something working.

Sorry - I had to go out for a while - Thanks for your reply. What do you think would be the best plan - should I completely remove all files and start over (probably the best solution) and what about the database? Can I reuse it or should that also be deleted and started over?

Glad it's working. Internet Names for Business is your host, or your host is someone buying/renting/leasing space in their data center.

(site still not 100% - keeps stalling when trying to migrate some of my Gallery 1 albums - but I am making a back up before I have the same experience as last night, don't want to loose where I am at this point. It was so strange - it was as if the gallery simply disintegrated.)

That's what the Netcraft toolbar reports. That's where your site is actually hosts. Whether your host is just a reseller or they own or rent actual servers and maintain them I don't know.

OK - now with the new install again I have imported a few albums and am again getting the following error
And just as previously, the Gallery is breaking down - None of the pages linked in the admin are appearing. (actually General and Gd are the only pages I can see - all else are blank) Please help me as I really need to get out of Gallery 1 because I have so many photos and albums that Gallery 1 looses the order. Please help!!

So this is during an import? Perhaps there is a bad image that the image toolkit is failing on.
Are you performing all of the steps in this guide exactly?

I tested my Gallery 1 as per instructions and installed Gallery 2 as correctly as I could by following the Migrating instructions. The biggest problem now is that the admin section is almost totally blank. I deleted the album that was suspect but I still have only General and Gd

and clearing the cache allows me to view the admin pages so I have made headway - but now what caused this problem? is Smarty a problem and how do I find that out? I will test uploading again and come back with the results.

Here I am again. Clearing the cache through lib/support allowed me to upload 2 small albums but since then I continue to get the error message mentioned earlier. I will continue to research this but would really appreciate an answer if someone has one - to save me the hours of research. It does appear that my problem is not a new one but the solutions I have found so far are too confusing for me. It appears this has something to do with Smarty but I am not sure what to do to correct it. Please anyone - help.

How many photos are in your Gallery install? 600, 700? G1 should be able to handle much more than that. If G1 is having issues with that few of photos and G2 is having issues importing very few items, it really sounds like there are major performance and resource issues on your server.

there are thousands of photos - and there is a known issue with it rearranging the album order. (documented in the forums) The issue with G2 I am sure is not performance and resource issues on the server (though I could be wrong) because I am only trying to migrate about 20 to 40 images at a time. Research has pointed to Smarty problems (also documented on the forums) but I can't figure out what the solution is. If it is a server issue, how would clearing the cache clear up the problem (blank pages anyway) Again any input appreciated.

Of course that was last night on another computer, but here are some links that I found today. I am not positive this is the problem but with I searched for blank admin pages I kept coming up with Smarty responses. The first one below was the primary one, the other is one I found this morning.

I really need help, please - the problems just keep getting worse. I continue to try to upload using the migrate plug in and I continue to get the error message as mentioned above. The pages in the admin keep coming up blank and I have to clear the cache before they come back. The error message stated above comes after the pics are uploaded but when the thumbnails are being created - sometimes none are done, and sometimes it locks up when they are about half done.
Then I got the following error message and no matter what I do I can't get the gallery to display at all. Please can someone help me - I will share the password if that helps.

OK I give up - removed the gallery AGAIN and will one more time try to clean install. I wish someone had some insight on why gallery 2 keeps disintegrating right in front of me. Is there any other version that is more stable than 2.3.1? I am so frustrated by this.

Once again I stated over. I even downloaded a new copy and uploaded from a different computer. I deleted not only the database on my server, but the entire user and started 100% over. And guess what - same exact problems. Now to open any pages in the admin section I need to clear the cache - every page - every time. AND I can't even see any thing on the gallery page except the Gallery logo and links. I put the site in debug mode an the code showing up on the gallery page is as follows. I am at my wits end on this. I have used Gallery 1.5 a lot and can't figure what I am doing wrong with this. I would really appreciate any help on this. Please .... If on a fresh install, new DB and new files, you get a error I have to suspect the host.
I don't see any glaring errors on the on the log you posted or the url.
All I can suggest is changing the (mysqli) to (mysql) in config.php.

What could be a potential server problem that would cause this. I have 20 websites running on this server - may with Gallery 1.5 installed, others with osCommerce and several with customized php programming - all running without problems. What is it about Gallery 2.3 that would cause such a conflict as it would commit suicide? And do you have any idea how to get it back? At this point I need to clear the cache everytime I want to access a page in the Admin and the Gallery is completely gone from view. This install I was actually able to get more pics uploaded than before but it would balk on the Thumbnail creation stage. The I would have to delete albums - I got any number of error messages which I checked out on the board but none of the responses solved my problem. I really want to make this work but I am at my wits end as I said.
Thanks for your response, but if it is my server it is something in the programming of Gallery that conflicts - and I'm sure there are others on the same server system with it working

ADDED: just checked the error logs and they are many many unable to build image, Error Toolkit Failure, Unable to read combined cache file.... Error (ERROR_TOOLKIT_FAILURE)in modules/netpbm/classes/NetPbmToolkit.class at line 739 (GalleryCoreApi::error) in modules is a common line at the bottom of the error logs.

Restore your backup? That is the first step.
That is a concern, try a different toolkit if you can but not GD as it is a resource hog.

I tried different toolkits and in different combinations, same problem - but I just found that I created a new user and it brought back the gallery for that user. It appears the users are corrupt. Any idea of how to remove and recreate the admin? I don't have a back up because I didn't have the gallery up long enough to create one. Someone must have had a similar experience. Please
