Connection problem and can't find volume on client

Another newbie user...

Gallery2 on Mac OSX 10.6.2
GalleryRemote.1.5.1-b46

GR is installed on the internal drive, the images are on an external drive.
GR started up fine, UI is fine. Created a new Gallery URL to connect to the server, ok, so far so good.

First problem:
When I attempt to Log In, I get the message

Gallery Remote can find no protocol implementation at the URL http://xxxx/gallery/albums
Check with a web browser that http://xxx/gallery/albums is a valid Gallery URL

Yet I can confirm using an FTP client that this is where the albums reside.

Second problem:
I can't reach the external drive in the GR user interface. So, I installed GR
on the external drive - same thing. Can't get to the external drive.

Is this an issue with not being able to log in to the Gallery server?

I'm lost.
