A client of mine received notice that their Host's server went down. They are using Gallery1.
Fortunately the Hosting Company had backups... the only problem being that the installation of Gallery1 was not put into Configuration Mode before being backed up.
SO... now the back up of the existing setup directory is 'locked' [ Error: Your userfile is not writeable ] nor am I able to install a new setup on top of it without starting a full clean installation.
Is there any way to work around this... can I go into the core files and set it to be configurable? (crossing fingers)
OR... will I have to do a complete new installation, with all albums being setup again from scratch?
Thanks SO much for your help. :D

I've figured it out. Please delete this thread, and thanks for a great product.

rather than delete the thread, I'm going to ask you to post what the solution was. The point of a forum is not just to help *you*, but to help others too, in the future, when they read how your problem was fixed.
I'm also going to move it to the G1 forum, as this isn't a G2 question.
Over to you.

Thanks for moving this to the G1 Forum... I was so focused on getting this fixed.
Here's what I did:
First off, this was a G1 1.5.9 installation on Unix.
* I kept getting the error: "Your Userfile is not writeable" even after setting all files/directories permissions to 777
* Decided to upload 1.5.10 and overwrite all the 1.5.9 files
* Uploaded new "empty" config.php and .htaccess files (both set to 777)
* The empty config and htaccess files finally permitted me to bypass the file unwritable error, and gave me access to the setup folder and Configuration Wizard
* Worked my way through the Configuration Wizard, addressing typical issues, and pointed the Album's url and path to the previous Album folder and tested
* It worked
I hope this helps anyone who has ran into the same problems!
Cheers,
Jen
