I have not uploaded to my site for a few years and see there is new Gallery software. My old computer is gone with my Gallery software from 2.5+ years ago and I am now on Windows Vista and Windows 7. Can you help with which new version of the Gallery software I should use to upload photos to my 2.5+ year old site?

thanks,
Jonathan

huh?

Do you have Gallery running on a website right now or are you trying to get Gallery running on a website?

Sorry if I was unclear. I am talking about Gallery Remote, the program on the computer that allows uploading to the website. I am not sure which version of Gallery to download to my new computers that will work with my website that is older. make sense?

Yes, I read this link before and have read it again. I have to say it’s all pretty confusing to me. I don’t know what Java VM is or what it means to run directly from the G2 site using Java Webstart.

What I think you are suggesting is
1. install the preferred version of Gallery Remote, on my computer that does not have it
a. this would be G2
2. then install the Uploadify module.

Is this correct?

Thanks,
Jonathan

No, I'm suggesting use the Uploadify module.

The GR maintainer is saying install the Upload Applet module in G2, under Site Admin > Plugins. I'm not sure about java webstart. I personally dislike most (all except for one) java based apps I've used including GR. So I don't have a lot of experience with them, including our very own Gallery Remote.

OK, so you can use the Uploadify module alone to upload photos? And Gallery Remote is not necessary? This seems strange given we are talking about the Gallery software.

Does Uploadify function as a replacement for Gallery Remote, i.e., uploads photos to website?

No, you'd need to go to the website, login, click Add Items.

Gallery Remote is not the only way to upload photos into Gallery.

Here's info about the Upload Applet:

OK, so I went to my website and logged in. I don’t see “Add Items”. (Now as I told you, this is an older version of Gallery. the link you gave me is to “Gallery2: How to add items” so maybe that is why Add Items is not there??)

The link you gave says, “Make sure the Remote plugin and the Upload Applet plugin is installed and activated.”

The remote plugin link say,

“Gallery2:Modules:remote
Gallery Remote Module
Adds the ability to use remote applications to connect to your Gallery.
Description
This module must be active to use...
The Upload Applet module
The Slideshow Applet module
Gallery Remote
Eye-Fi Wireless SD Card
And for many other Gallery Remote Protocol based clients. (See the other clients page to have a list of Gallery2 clients using the remote API) “

But you are telling me to use Uploadify not Gallery Remote. this is really confusing. Can you give me some clear instructions on how to install Uploadify?

I'm suggesting a different method because Gallery Remote will not work on Win7.

If you don't have "Add Items" then you're using some theme I've never seen because that's a core part of G2 and has been since the beginning.

If you are using an older version of Gallery my only suggestion is to upgrade to the latest version, 2.3.1
FAQ: How to upgrade Gallery2?

We can't support anything older and I wouldn't be surprised if the Uploadify module won't work on anything older than 2.3

This link gives more info about Uploadify:
http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Modules:uploadify

This link gives more info on other upload methods:
http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:How_to_Add_Items

This link gives more info on installing additional plugins:
http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:How_to_Install_Plugins

NOTE: The Uploadify module is not currently available from the Get More Plugins, but you just need to download the file, unzip it and upload it into your modules directory so you would end up with a directory under your modules directory called uploadify.

My version is Gallery 2 Core Module, 1.2.0. The instructions to upgrade (below) may be over my head. It says to first find “a Maintenance mode” but don’t see this.

"Gallery 2.1+ has a "Maintenance mode" feature. Edit your config.php file using a text editor and find this section. It has instructions for turning on this mode. Example settings (use only one of these lines):
$gallery->setConfig('mode.maintenance', true);
$gallery->setConfig('mode.maintenance', '/maintenance.html');
$gallery->setConfig('mode.maintenance', 'http://myothersite.com/');"

Under Site Admin, Plugins, Get More Plugins, at bottom of list it says:
Upgrade All Plugins
Gallery can automatically upgrade your themes and modules to the latest available versions. No new plugins will be downloaded.

Would it make any difference to run this?

I believe that 1.2.0 is actually 2.2

Post your system info, this link explains how:

Right now I can only recommend upgrading to the latest version.
