Hi all,

I've lost all thumbs and resizes and support tells me to re-ipload them manually cos creating 17.000 thumbs in bulk won't happen... or we could importing them from a backup of my directory.

Where do I find thumbs and resized images? I've googled forever!!

Gallery 2.3.1
Imagemagick does the thumbs
FFMPEG for movies

The only thing I could find was this:

Quote:
They are stored in the g2data/derivate folder.

This folder does not exist on my server...

Thanks for any pointers!

Chris

g2data/cache/derivative

Unfortunately, depending on what you have to begin with, you will not be able to upload them manually. Derivatives (including thumbnails) are filed by id number, not in a place related to the original image location or album. Also they have numeric names and a file-type extension of ".dat"

If you have a backup though, with the derivative images already in the correct directory structure and under the right names, you should be ok.

You can also try rebuilding them 1 album at a time by going to Edit Album > Album (tab) and selecting the appropriate options there.

Thanks for the help guys! I found it :)

I hope I can restore on server form the backup - it should all be there!

I tried to rebuild thumbs the entire gallery, that's what killed them as the whole thing came crashing down and I was left without thumbs. I guess that wasn't wise!

If I have to re-build 120 albums with 17000 images manually I'll go insane! Just rebuilding 50 images takes sth like 10 minutes - it'll be nuts!

So fingers crossed :)

Thanks again

Chris

Ouch, I can rebuild about 800 images at my shared host in about 2 minutes. There's a lot of factors that go into that. Just how oversold the server is, is probably the biggest factor. Are you using GD or ImageMagick? How big the original images are, etc. Stuff like that. But what you're experiencing is what I see time and time again at the less than $10/month "unlimited" disk space type hosts.

One thing you need to be aware of on a shared host is that you are sharing resources with potentially 100s and at low-end hosts 1000s of other users. Play nice :) If you don't need to do huge, time consuming resource intensive stuff, don't. Resize images before uploading to make them process faster and take up less space, etc. There's no reason to rebuild images unless they've gotten corrupt for what ever reason or you need to change stuff, size, watermark, etc (if it ain't broke don't fix it)

Thanks for that nivekam.

I was actually going to post another post about finding a good host - I'm happy to pay good money if the performance is right.

Yes I realise what you say about resources. 2 days ago I upgraded to a $50/month VPS account because I was sick of how slow things were. That's also why I figured I would have more resources to play with ... and honestly I underestimated the load it would cause, my bad. Still...

I'm happy to pay around the $50 - $70/month. If it means I get a premium service, support for all plugins and all toolkits etc. That the thing doesn't come crashing down every time I play around a little. And decent response times.

I'm with hostforweb.com at the moment. I am with them because their support is outstanding, They really go out of their way to fix my mess - every time. But server performance is really poor and I'm starting to get sick of it - so I'm shopping around. Not only resources but also response and page load times are so slow. It's just not fun browsing the gallery, it's as if I were on a modem... in 1996 ...

If you have any suggestions I'm all ears!

Thanks for the help :)

Excellent, I will signup for an account immediately and run trials.

Could you maybe give me 1 or 2 URLs for galleries on "pair" so I can do a few clicks? Not that i don't trust you, but I would just like to click around a little.

Also if you have a referral code which I can use in your benefit - let me know.

Thanks so much for the help!

Thanks very much!

I have to be out for a couple of hours. Then I'll test and I'll let you know results.

Much appreciated!

Chris
