G3 RC2 'organise album' not working properly

Didnt think much of the first verion in rc1 which couldnt place photos or albums in the place they were dragged n dropped in so I was pleased to see it had been rewritten... except, the first thing I used it for gave 'remote server error' when trying to move an album. This happened a few times and left the gallery with 200+ albums in random order. It works sometimes ... seems ok if set to sort by title or date added.

I prefer to use manual organisation on the gallery main page as albums are deleted and replaced by samples for long term record. With this not working I have updated old albums on top of new ones. In G2 I could very quickly batch delete all photos in an album and reupload samples but not in G3 rc1...had to delete 1 by 1. Easier to delete the whole album and make a new one.

G3 rc1 was also excrutiating slow moving photos... if in the wrong place I told people it was quicker to delete them and reupload.
Deleting was also only possible one by one in rc1 so when someone flooded the main gallery with photos instead of putting them in their album, I had to spend a long time just deleting them - moving took 10 times longer!

Which brings me to one other minor point... when people mess up the gallery uploading lots of photos in the wrong place, I cannot do anything... no way to log someone out or stop an activity. In most of the situations they have started a large upload and gone away for a coffee. The only thing I could do to stop the upload process was delete their account and open a new one.

Hope this new version works better! G2 looks more like G4 when it comes to organising albums and photos. To be honest, many things are simpler in G3 but many others are worse than G2. I'm not talking about platform compatibility but just general usage.

The mouse click for full size actually looks more like full size in rc2.

The problem with moving being slow is probably related to this ticket: https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/gallery/ticket/1190
We'll fix that in the 3.0 release

Please file a ticket for the "Log users out remotely" issue and we can work up an admin page to help you with that.

Actually now noticing a lot of improvements in rc2 ...organising albums and deleting - good!

One thing maybe worth mentioning is the menu order:

Add
Add photos
Add an album

Might be better with 'Add an album' above 'Add a photo'. People hit add a photo without thinking about putting them in an album first. Its also the logical order.

PS
Tag module has issues with auto-complete and often doesnt add the tags. Fiddly to get it to work..adding spaces between commas and then deleting before it saves all keyword tags properly.

I just upgraded to RC2 and was looking forward to trying the new organize album function. Every time I try to use it, I am getting the remote server error and it says to contact the Gallery administrator. That's me, but I don't know what the problem is or how to fix it. Sometimes just the frame comes up and then it hangs. More often it gets to the error message and I can close it and get back to the album. The pictures in the album never come up in the organize window.

As a follow-up to my last post, I tried it again on another computer running Windows 7 and it started working. It worked with Opera, FF, and IE8. Then I went back to my Win2000 computer and now it is working there. Then with Opera on my Kubuntu machine, it gets to the organize window with all the album pictures are showing but when I select one and drag it to a new location, I can't release it. At least I am getting further along than before and I didn't do anything except trying multiple times on multiple computers.

Got the same problem, although I couldn't find any differences between seamonkey, opera and firefox on windows xp. The only thing I don't do perfectly is the php version requirements. I got php 5.2.12, required is 5.2.3
I talked to my webhost and of course they won't do any update soon? [b]But is this really causing it (I have set everything else correctly http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery3:Requirements)

PHP 5.2.12 is newer than 5.2.3 so that should be fine.

What problem are you having exactly?

When I try to oragnize the album I got a error message saying: "remote Server error, Contact your gallery administrator." (or something like this) It sadly doesn't say anything else more useful.
Today I get this:

Can you check to see if there is anything in your gallery3/var/logs files regarding this? Oh wait, I just looked at your Gallery.

Please switch to the default Wind theme and try again first.

I was getting the same "Remote server error: Contact your gallery administrator" message when I used Firefox. If I used IE8 or Chrome it worked fine. I got no errors at all in my error log file. Finally I figured out that if I went to "cwappy.com" it worked, but it wouldn't work with "www.cwappy.com". Chrome and IE8 don't work at the "www" address either. ???

I thought I would mention this in case it helps with the discussion.

Ok, I tried Opera, Firefox, Seamonkey, Chrome and IE with and without www - Firefox, Seamonkey and Opera give me the error message, Chrome gives a blank page and IE8 can't even show me the option to organize the album (I already had trouble with the login, something about ajax). I don't know, but something is really weird...

So it is a flash problem? How can I solve it - I have the gallery on a subdomain and I just tried to accees via direct path - still doesn't work. Can I move/organize the pictures manually?

@michelle778 I'd like to understand the problem a little better. Any chance I can get an account on your site to see if I can reproduce the problem myself remotely?

I actually noticed that a different problem but I don't know if it's related. When I was trying to recover my site using the server upload function. It would actually stop at 1 picture. I finally found a post somewhere in the forums that says to change the "max_execution_time" on the php.ini. I change it from 30 to 300 and also the "max_input_time" from 60 to 600.

I also tried a different browser. I was using safari and I switched to chrome.

@michelle778: ok I'm guessing this is something in your server config. Can you please verify that you're running Apache 2.2? Because your server reports itself as: Apache/Nginx/Varnish and I believe that it's interfering with the headers that the Flash-based organize code is sending back to your server. I won't know for sure without diagnosing this further and for that I'd need ssh access to your server or you'd need to do some diagnostics to figure out what headers are making it through.

From my testing it looks like if I send an X-Gallery-Request-Key header, it works. But the Flash code sends x_gallery_request_key, which is also legal, but is not working. If I can figure out how that header shows up on the far side I might be able to figure it out. Perhaps if you create a PHP file containing

<? phpinfo(); ?>

and pm me the url, that might be enough.

It's unfortunatly not my server (shared hosting) and I guess I can't make them change anything at all...
phpinfo: http://agrotux.com/index.php - I don't know the apache version.

Thank you for your help!

Hrmph. Either way, the header seems to make it through.

bash-3.2$ curl -q -H "x_gallery_request_key: Bar" -v 'http://agrotux.com/index.php' 2>&1 | grep -i request_key
> x_gallery_request_key: Bar
<tr><td class="e">HTTP_X_GALLERY_REQUEST_KEY </td><td class="v">Bar </td></tr>
<tr><td class="e">_SERVER["HTTP_X_GALLERY_REQUEST_KEY"]</td><td class="v">Bar</td></tr>
<tr><td class="e">_ENV["HTTP_X_GALLERY_REQUEST_KEY"]</td><td class="v">Bar</td></tr>

bash-3.2$ curl -q -H "X-Gallery-Request-Key: Bar" -v 'http://agrotux.com/index.php' 2>&1 | grep -i request_key
<tr><td class="e">HTTP_X_GALLERY_REQUEST_KEY </td><td class="v">Bar </td></tr>
<tr><td class="e">_SERVER["HTTP_X_GALLERY_REQUEST_KEY"]</td><td class="v">Bar</td></tr>
<tr><td class="e">_ENV["HTTP_X_GALLERY_REQUEST_KEY"]</td><td class="v">Bar</td></tr>

I'm not sure I can easily figure this out remotely. Is there any chance that I can get ssh access to your domain so that I can tinker with the code directly? That should let me figure it out quickly.

Sorry no, I have no ssh access to that webhost. But since I had more trouble with the hoster I wil change to another one. We will see if the problem is the same there - I will keep you updated (anyway I tried on some free php webhost and the organize album stuff worked there)

I had the same problem (same result as in michelle778's screenshot), it might be because I'm running PHP as FastCGI, not Apache module. Anyway, I found out that the Organize module from RC1 works OK and doesn't even need Flash (so it will work on those iPhones and iPads out there). And it's even compatible with Gallery3 RC2, so I just replaced it there and it works OK. It would be great if Gallery offered both the Flash and non-Flash modules (maybe one of them as a separate download).

I also get "Remote server error: Contact your gallery administrator" from
gallery3/modules/organize/lib/Gallery3WebClient.swf that could be
a cross script error, (loading flash from me.com and gallery3 on www.me.com)
but I don't see how to fix it..

I've replace the flash organize with the java organize in Gallery3 RC1 and it
works fine.

noting in logs even with error_reporting(E_ALL); so my guess is its in the .swf
oh, my database isn't localhost as I have mirrors on several servers.

@rob: Do you have any reverse proxies in the way? I'd love to debug this and see if I can figure out what's going on. If you can give me ssh access with write perms to your gallery3 install I can probably figure out what's going wrong with the Flash uploader.

I just installed Gallery3 today to test and can't get the Organize feature to work either: http://www.andrewluvtrains.com/gallery3. I tried this in Chrome, Firefox and IE on my XP laptop. I also tried it in Chrome and IE on my Windows 7 Desktop and get the same "Remote Server Error" that others get. I'm not sure what more information I can provide to help debug this - but I can't get it to work at all.

What version of the code do I download to test this? I downloaded gallery-gallery3-3.0-rc-2-188-g21a0f83 (experimental version) and I'm still seeing the same problem with a fresh install. http://www.andrewluvtrains.com/gallery3/ - was that the right version for the fix?

@anlenterprises: This problem seems to happen when our REST credentials aren't passed down from the Flash app to the server properly. I'm not yet sure why this isn't happening, and I haven't been able to reproduce it. In order to fix this, I need to be able to reproduce it on a server where I have ssh access so that I can tinker with the code. Can you help me out?

Unfortunately I don't have SSH access myself - I can give you an FTP login and a gallery admin. I can try to ask specific questions of the hosting provider - but not sure what else to do...

I'm debating whether I like this host or not - I went with them as they were cheap and allowed multiple domains - my other provider was jumping up in price. Maybe have to look at another host...

I've tried to download the code again from
http://garr.dl.sourceforge.net/project/gallery/gallery3/3.0-rc-2/gallery-3.0-rc-2.zip

and run over the old files I add and I still have the same problem... do I need to do somthing else? Should I reinstall the gallery?

Thanks
