Just a quick question, I hope....

What is the recommended way of backing up the gallery? Obviously, get the raw data (pictures) from the site.... I am more curious about the DB. I'm in the process of moving off a hosted setup and onto my own server. I've seen the "Gallery2:How do I Make Backups of My Database" page and I've seen the backup utility in the Maintenance section of the interface. What's the recommended way? I'd like to think that if you guys made a tool to backup your own stuff, then that would be the recommended way but, again, I've been reading that aforementioned page.

Do a dump from phpMyAdmin or the command line. The XML "backup" from the maintenance page doesn't seem to work. At least I've never been successful in getting a restore from it. It was a new tool for 2.3 and I don't think it was totally tested or perhaps something broke that wasn't caught between RC and final release. But G2 is no longer in development so it's not a feature that's going to get removed or fixed.

That's for the DB, don't forget to backup your g2data directory :)

Okay, that was what I needed to know. Now, I've seen that FAQ you linked to and am now curious if the page, about backing up the DB, is still accurate.

Those screenshots seem a bit dated, but it should be close enough. If you use the command line, that's still the same for sure.

If you can only use it through phpMyAdmin and the version of phpMyAdmin you're using really doesn't match up close enough for those screenshots, let me know and I'll see about getting those updated.

phpMyAdmin - 2.11.9.5 is my version.

I doubt I have CLI access to this server, as it's not mine.

The screen-shot shows the options I chose before I hit "go" for the backup file to be saved locally.

Yeah, I thought so too so I went on ahead and tried it. It looks like I've successfully moved my Gallery to another server! This one is mine [at home] so I have CLI access to it and will be creating a backup job in Ubuntu Server. Hopefully, I will not have to deal with this again for a long time.

Thanks for the help and feel free to update the image in the FAQ with the one I've uploaded in the previous post.
