It's possible and not much work, but just so you are aware, if you have other stuff installed in the root of your site or even pages it can be a pain to separate them in the future if you decide to.
FAQ: How can I move my gallery installation from one folder to another?

You will need to create / edit rewrite rules in your htaccess file.

Do a google search for tutorials on how to use this and experiment.

He explained above after Kevin's post that he doesn't want to move the folders but to keep the installation in site.com/gallery2 but be able to call it as if it was in the site.com root folder.

This requires url rewriting.

OR create an embed page that you can place anywhere.

yeah i got the site.com redirected to site.com/gallery2 in cpanel, 302 permanent redirect, but was thinking this may not be the best way to do this ...

Cpanel would have put the url rewrite into your webserver configuration file for you.

Whichever way that works for you and easy to manage by you is the best way. Looks like doing it in with your cpanel should fit both criteria.

Similarly, maybe nivekiam does not like puppies but unless he tells us this is the case (or we see him freaking out at the sight of one), we probably can't make that assumption.

depends on the type of redirect

Read everything you can find here: http://www.google.com/webmasters/

Here:
http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=70897&hl=en

and for the redirects, here:
http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=93633&hl=en

If you want www.example.com to load www.example.com/gallery you can use URL Rewriting (creating a redirect), but why not just put the content of www.example.com/gallery to www.example.com? No redirects, nice and simple and it achieves your ultimate goal, if someone goes to www.example.com, they get the content of www.example.com/gallery and if anyone cares to add to this run-on sentence to create the worlds longest sentence related to gallery stuff please continue here

It may indeed be the case that search engines do not index 302 redirects as this says you have temporarily pointing the location somewhere and will soon be returning it to the original, or another, location.

As said though, if this looks like this is turning into a hassle for you and you are unable / unwilling to go through the hassle of reading up on online tutorials on how to do this, then just move the installation to your root folder and be done with it.

thats fine thank you very much. i have done that with an installation in the root site.com. then you install joomla in site.com and wow do they not like each other being in the same folder. my goal was to keep them separate in folders and not break any google rules. tyvm for for help and will visit the tutorials you have provided...

Well, you can't have two applications sharing the same space. Whenever someone goes to yoursite.com, you either want them to see one of joomla or gallery2.

I have had an instance when I installed something into site.com/joomla/ and wanted it to be called by site.com as I wanted the flexibility to change to site.com/wordpress/ or site.com/somethingelse/ without deleting the old joomla folder.

The way to do this in that case is to change the apache documentroot to /server/path/to/site.com/public_html/joomla/. I believe this is possible with cpanel but don't ask me how as I don't use cpanel. When the docroot is changed in that instance, everyone that navigates to site.com will get served the contents of site.com/joomla/.

This might be what you want.

There is no compromise and it is a simple matter to achieve.

Anyway, I believe this has run its course and any further contribution here is a waste of time.

Good luck to you.
