I am wondering if it is worth it to upgrade from 2.3 to 3.0? If so, to be clear, would I need to completely replace all my files? I used the pre-installer to install 2.3 so not sure if this would change how I upgrade further to 3.0. If there is an easier way to upgrade through my file manager, please let me know! My system details are below:

Gallery version = 2.3 core 1.3.0
API = Core 7.54, Module 3.9, Theme 2.6, Embed 1.5
PHP version = 5.2.9 cgi-fcgi
Webserver = Apache
Database = mysqli 5.0.91-community, lock.system=flock
Toolkits = ImageMagick, LinkItemToolkit, SquareThumb
Acceleration = none, none
Operating system = Linux container-12.crucialvps.com 2.6.18-028stab064.8-ent #1 SMP Sat Oct 31 08:34:51 MSK 2009 i686
Default theme = carbon
gettext = enabled
Locale = en_US
Browser = Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X 10_5_8; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.16 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0 Safari/533.16

Thank you,
Elle

It's not an "upgrade" from G2 to G3. G3 is totally separate and you'd migrate to G3 by running an import utility. You'll need enough space on your server to be able to basically use twice the amount of space you currently are for your photos.

The other thing you need to be aware of is that since G2 and G3 share nothing in common other than and end result, nothing from G2 is compatible with G3. So if you are relying on certain functionality in G2, like color packs, or image frames, or a polished shopping cart or something like that, it may not be in G3 yet or ever.

Thank you for answering. I am mostly an end user, as you can tell, but understand enough to run my own site if I research things a bit.
You mentioned G3 wouldn't have a shopping cart, etc. What is/are the primary difference(s) between G2 and G3? Is there a different type of user targeted for G3? I primarily use and need my site to illustrate my photography, both for my career/sale and art. Currently, I'm not using the shopping cart option, but I can see wanting to use it in the future. Outside of that, I'm still curious the reason for coming out with G3 and the differences.

See here about the philosophy behind G3:
http://gallery.menalto.com/gallery_3.0_rc2_released

G2 is a huge pig. It's an "everything including the kitchen sink" type of software. It's over designed, over built and can do pretty much anything. Being as flexible as it is can make doing certain things harder than they need to be, like using it, installing it, programming for it, customizing it, etc. :)

G3 is easier to use, install, maintain, customize, extend, etc.

There is a shopping cart for G3, but it's not as polished or feature-full as what's available for G2. If you rely on fine grained permissions, those also are not in G3.

There's already way more interest and excitement behind G3 (before it's first official, stable release) than what took well over a year for G2 after it's release. There's more community contributed modules and themes already and lots more to come.

If you know HTML and CSS G3 is just way easier to customize the look and feel of.

Exactly :))
As I mentioned, I'm more of an end user with programs. I make my way around OK with the IT side, but I do find parts of getting my site up and maintaining certain aspects of it with G2 difficult. It sounds like, G3 may be what I am looking for. I don't have any kind of flash program attached to prevent copy and pasting of images however (which bothers me to no end, so I've had to enlarge my watermarks across an entire image rather then just at the bottom of the image. I would love a non-flash plugin for the prevention of copy and paste). I'm assuming even though G3 isn't as polished as you say, that the visuals of the themes still maintain the same look, yes?

It's taken me forever to getting around to just figuring out how to remove the Gallery logo off my front page and then getting your main page to actually be your main page, lol. I recently lost information and had to begin to redo my site. Right now, I'm not too far along, so maybe I should just install G3 fresh and remove all the old G2 files.

Enlarging the watermarks is the correct way and only proper way to protect your images IMO. If someone really wants your images they can take them. There is no true protection to prevent copying the images. Flash or non-flash based, if I can see the images I can get them. Flash makes it harder, but they are being served from something and I can find that and get them.

You make all very good points and make me feel even better about the fact I've had to enlarge those watermarks. At first, I thought it was ruining the image, but I was simply having too many problems with image theft and copyright violation. Overall then, the getting all the glitches ironed out with G2, would that be almost completely gone with G3? (ex. easier to remove gallery logos, getting your index/main page straightened out, etc.) From your description of G3, you said its "easier to use"...does this mean less programming? I apologize for being repetitive, but I really want to make sure I understand both programs before I chuck G2.

And again, I appreciate the knowledge! :)
