Everything seemed to go just fine in the install, and I got to the "Success!" page, but when I hit the 'Start using Gallery' link, I get an error saying "url not valid".

The Gallery3 folder it is trying to go to is there, so I don't understand. I looked in that folder, and there is no 'index.html' page or anything, is there supposed to be a web page there?

... there is an index.php file there, btw...

There isn't supposed to be an index.html file; just index.php.

Can't tell more without more information.

What more information do you need? I'll be happy to try to dig it up. The index.php is there, untouched, so I don't know why I'm getting an invalid url message. I'm attaching the index.php, in case you can see something that's wrong with it.

It's running v 2.2.16. Gallery2 didn't have this problem. I noticed somewhere it said something about needing a later version of PHP than i have though, could that be it?

G2 and G3 have nothing in common except for the team behind it.

I'm not sure if you got this working (I'm thinking not). If you want more help, you'll have to give more info.
1. The url to your site.
2. Php info page (a la http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery3:FAQ#How_do_I_create_a_phpinfo_page.3F ).
3. If you have any info in your gallery3/var/logs, might as well give that too.

If you're not comfortable giving that info, I understand, but it means there's not much info for anyone to look at to try to help you. As of right now, all anyone knows is that you have a site that is apparently not working the way you think it should.

Could it be your server configuration? Yes.
Could it be your software components? Absolutely.
Could it be a bug in Gallery3? Maybe.
Could it be that you just messed something up? Totally.

There's no way to narrow it down without more information.
