Upgrading from subdomain installation

Forgive me if this is duplicative. Also, please forgive my lack of server expertise. I will appreciate your patience and guidance. Finally getting around to upgrading from G2, and I read the instructions. I don't have a /var sub-directory. So, I started looking around the forums. The closest recent post I found was at http://galleryproject.org/node/112503 -- with a suggestion that installation to a subdomain was not necessarily a good idea. However, when I installed G2 a few years ago, it was acceptable, especially if you wanted to control access (hidden g2_data) to your original photos. I need to keep the subdomain for my Gallery in place, because it's been publicized far and wide at its present URL. Can I just do a fresh install of G3 in my subdomain and point to my existing database? |

Yes. Just make sure you take regular steps and backup first.
