I currently host my implementation of G2 on my own dev server from home, on a SDSL line from Covad (1.1Mbps up and down). I'd like to move my gallery to a hosting provider. I was looking at Godaddy.com, because they offer a ton of space for little cash. Is setting up G2 on a Godaddy.com account relatively painless? Is it possible to setup ffmpeg/binaries on Godaddy.com hosted accounts? Many thanks in advance for feedback.

I have used POWWEB for 6 years and they keep upping their options / space etc while retaining the monthly price of less than $8 (US). Uptime is very good, and they are Gallery2 approved.
GODADDY seem from what I see to be the low end when it comes to hosting - you get what you pay for...
POWWEB is http://www.powweb.com - worth a look - and no I don't work for them...

Thanks for the info, ajhpayne. Do you know if it's easier to update the version of G2 that their self-install scripts use? Are the binaries (e.g. ffmpeg) easily modifed per hosted account?

Also, has anyone written a tutorial or supplied information about migrating data/existing G2 setups to another server and mySQL db?

Thanks again...

- FAQ: How can I move my gallery installation from one server to another?

- certified webhosts (we get tons of webhosts that want to get on our short list of certified webhosts. all of the webhosts in the current list have been evaluated and they should all have the necessary binaries (imagemagick ,netpbm, ffmpeg, ..) etc.
http://gallery.menalto.com/wiki/Web_Hosting_Referral_Page
personally, i'm not hosting on any of those, but mostly because I live not in the USA.

- as to upgrading g2 installations of powweb or installations that are based on "cpanel fantastico":
never seen their code. but from time to time, i see problems in the forums. but that might be a minority, ... don't know.
personally, i wouldn't use those 1-click installations exactly because of the reason that i want to have complete control and i don't want to depend on their maintenance / upgrade code.

edit: the requirement for ffmpeg with flv / VP6 support is probably not accounted for. the flv support in g2 is relatively new and i guess we don't check for specific codecs when checking for ffmpeg on the certified webhosts.

At this time I don't have any information on that Robert - just working on my 1st installation of Gallery2, but I did add a module tonight very easily with FTP + Site Admin. I have found POWWEB support people pretty helpful most of the time.

I was able to get ffmpeg to work on GoDaddy shared hosting. I just uploaded ffmpeg to my hosting account, and then in Gallery2 I specified the path to the hosting account /home/content/1/2/3/123myusername/html/ffmpeg and then uploaded a video. Everything appears to be working great so far. I just can't figure out how to go back and update the thumbnail on the old videos... The link I got ffmpeg from is http://www.infiniteconcatenation.com/download/software/ffmpeg/ffmpeg.zip

how were you able to determine what the path was?

were you able to figure out how to get FFMPEG to create thumbnails for videos that are already on your site?

Thanks!

I current have a site with Dreamhost. However, their Gallery2 installation does not support DCRAW to handle RAW files. When I manually activate DCRAW, install DCRAW 8.86, and modify the php.ini (to increase upload/posting of 13MB files), the system crashes with a "500 Internal Server Error". I am tired of fiddling around with it to get my existing Dreamhost site to work and am looking for a new hosting provider that will allow me to host RAW images (.CR2) files.

Does Powweb's Gallery2 setup handles RAW/DCRAW? Will it allow processing of 15MB RAW files without crashing?

What other hosting providers would you recommend?

Thanks
