Hello,
I'm trying to upgrade to G2.3 from G2.2.5. When running the installer, I get a warning for over 2000 old files and nearly 200 modified files. Since I can't figure out how to run the cleanup.sh script (no shell access), I proceed to the next step. While upgrading the Core Module, the page tries to load, then after a few minutes, I get the "IE cannot display the web page" message with no corresponding error code.
Is this caused by the old/modified files or is there something else going on here? If it is the old/modified files that are preventing the upgrade, how do I run the script? I've looked at the numerous threads regarding the cleanup.sh script, but they either say I need shell access or to create a short php file to execute it. Ok.... so, how do I create a php file?
Please help before I'm completely bald from ripping my hair out....

Since the upgrade did not work, I've tried to restore the complete Gallery to when it was working. Unfortunately, that too has failed....
The upgrade was downloaded from here, unzipped to my desktop, and uploaded over top of the existing Gallery using FTP. The upgrader started just as it should have. When I first performed the "System Checks" it only found Old Files (no modified fies). Since I had backed up the database manually from my host's site, I skipped the Database Backup step in the upgrader and continued with the "Core Module Upgrade" step. This is when I got the "IE cannot display the web page".
Since I could not get past this step, I tried to restore the installation to before the upgrade was uploaded just so I could get my site working again (it's a pretty busy place). Unfortunately, for reasons unbeknownst to me, it could not be restored. When I tried running the upgrader again I started getting "Modified Files" as well as "Old Files" in the "System Check" step. There is one of the restore attempts (there have been four in total now....) that is finding only 2 "Modified Files" in the "System Check" step. They are:
init.inc
main.php
There are still over 2500 old files, but I'm not too worried about those since it says they won't interfere.
But I digress.
My question now is, can I try using the Preinstaller even though the G2.3 files have already been FTP'd over top of the G2.2.5 files?
Any help is appreciated.
Andrew

yes as long as you don't get errors from the preinstaller.
FAQ: How can I upload a theme or module via FTP when I used the preinstaller?
except change permissions on the gallery folder.
old files are not a problem modified files are a problem.
FAQ: How can I make sure that my installation files are all intact?
post the upgrade log files that are in the g2data directory.

I have downloaded the update logs from the G2 version that only found 2 modified files during the system check (the other 3 versions have 136). They're a bit of a jumble, but maybe you can make heads or tails of them.
In the meantime, I'd like to try using the preinstaller to perform the upgrade. Could you tell me what the file permissions need to be set to and on which files?
Thanks,
Andrew

I would set them all to 777 then change them back later.
From your logs I don't see anything out of the ordinary.

Hi Dave,
I've had to restore my Gallery from a local backup just to get it working again (5 days down is waaaaay too long) before attempting the upgrade again. I'm having an issue with what I would call "orphaned" items.
If you have a chance, could you take a look at http://gallery.menalto.com/node/86886 and let me know what you think?
Thanks,
Andrew

Ok.... I'm back to where I was 3 weeks ago. The Gallery is working again
However, I still can't get the upgrade to take. I've had the techs at my host to check the file permissions (since the chmod script in lib/support wont finish.... I just get "IE cannot display the web page" after several minutes of it trying to load). Everything is "opened up" properly, but the "Installing Core Module" step still hangs. After several minutes of the page trying to load, I get "IE cannot display the web page".
I've tried uploading the Gallery 2.3 files directly over my G2 files with ftp and I've tried using the Pre-Installer. Both with the same result.
The last time I tried with the Pre-Installer, I got a Warning during the system check for "Modified Files". How do I fix that?
Any ideas???

just FTP the file(s) over again, overwriting the existing ones it complains about.
I suspect there might be somthing in the servers error log at that time. It could be it takes too long and your host stops the process in its tracks.
FAQ: What is the webserver error log?

Thanks for the quick reply, Dave.
The host suspects that the server is timing out, so he's going to unpack the files overtop of my existing installation from the backend. If it times out during the "Upgrade Core Module" again, then I'm not sure what I can do other than giving my admin password to my host and asking very nicely if they could do it for me....
By the way, what are you doing working on Good Friday...?? No rest for the weary, eh?

Hi Dave,
I hope you had a good Easter.
The techs at my host said that since the upgrader is web based, they would be subject to the same timeouts as I am, so won't be able to help with running the upgrade.
What could be preventing the "Upgrade Core Module" step from finishing? From the server error log, I've maxed out my MySQL connections, but that shouldn't be an issue anymore since the techs created another user on my database and set up my Gallery to access through that new user.
Here is the top of my log. I don't know how old this error is. The rest is the exact same repeated many, MANY times:
PHP Warning: mysql_connect() [<a href='function.mysql-connect'>function.mysql-connect</a>]: User andrewb_app already has more than 'max_user_connections' active connections in /hermes/web05/b17/pow.andrewb/htdocs/g2/lib/adodb/drivers/adodb-mysql.inc.php on line 366
There are almost 50,000 derrivatives in my cache. Do these need to be "opened up" as far as permissions go as well? Could the high number be causing the upgrade to hang?
Should I just cross my fingers and try again or is there something you can suggest I try to make it work?
Thanks,
Andrew

FAQ: I seem to be running into some sort of MySQL query limit, is there anything that can be done?
Try the upgrade again, note the time and look in the error log about the same time and see if it yields info.

Do you mean the server CGI error logs or the upgrade logs?
The server error logs don't seem to record the date and time of the errors which is why I don't know how old the error I posted previously is.
And since I've had to restore my G2 yet again to keep my site working, the upgrade log is useless right now. I will try the upgrade again and check both logs if it still doesn't take.
Before I do, though, could you tell me if I just need to chmod the directories within G2 to 777 or ALL the sub-directories and files found therein? As a reminder, the "File Permissions" tool in lib/support just hangs when I run it, so "opening up" has to be done manually....

Here's a thought.... Is installing this upgrade something that can be done in the "Paid Support" section? If so, about how much?

Ok, so I'm going to try this one more time before handing it off to someone.
I have a Tech at Powweb waiting to unpack the upgrade for me once I've set the permissions properly. As I mentioned, the "File Permissions" tool in lib/support doesn't seem to work for me so I'm looking for some guidance with "opening up" the directories manually (ie. which directories? top level only or ALL sub-directories and files? Including the 10s of thousands of derrivatives in the cache?)
Also, since the upgrade will be unpacked by a technician as opposed to being uploaded by me or the pre-installer, should I rename my current installation directory (gallery_old, or gallery2) before proceeding or can I leave it as it is (g2)? I have the upgrade instructions, but I'm not sure which method applies to this situation.
Thanks in advance,
Andrew

@paid support: http://gallery.menalto.com/paidsupport
You can overwrite the files in the gallery2 directory. Remmeber step one of the upgrade procedure is to backup.

Ok, thanks Dave. I exported a backup of the database yesterday so I should be good to go. I guess I'll just open up the top level directories and hope for the best, then.

Hi Dave,
Well, I had the tech at Powweb run the cleanup.sh script and it was successful in removing all 2000+ old files. When I ran the upgrader, the system check came back all green.
Unfortunately, the "Upgrade Core Module" step still won't finish. The page loads for several minutes, then shows the "IE cannot display the webpage" message.
At this point, I'm out of ideas and out of time. I will open a paid support request for you. Hopefully, you have a couple of tricks up your sleeve.
Thanks,
Andrew

Was a solution ever found for this problem - I'm getting the exact same problem trying to update.
My server returns the following on the upgrade core step after a few minutes.
The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.
The script had an error or it did not produce any output. If there was an error, you should be able to see it in the error log.
this generally happens when a .php doesn't return any output fast enough.

Apparently, this was caused by my host imposing resourse limits on the server which prevented the script from finishing. The solution was to pay someone else to perform the upgrade. They downloaded my complete Gallery installation onto their own server, performed the upgrade, and reloaded it back onto my server.
Just go to "paid support" and open a ticket (or whatever they call them here) and someone will get back to you. It was quite reasonable considering I had been fussing with it for about a month.

thanks - I have a couple of other servers I have access to - so I might try that myself. Though I don't look forward to ftp-ing the files both ways.

ssh baaaaby
with ssh access you can wget and download files directly to the server. No need to FTP.
