Ah, I understand about the color box. I have not worked through the new elements in the SVN version of G2. I installed it after seeing and getting pssyched by your PGlightbox.

The possibilities of Custom Fields and flying boxes are a BIG deal as I have indicated. I came across a site this eve that suggested a way of using a flying box with associated metadata, aka Custom Fields. Grrr, I can't find it, but of the many ideas I have envisioned for what I finally see possible in your theme, the simplest first thing for Custom Fields would be to create a flying box, displaying whatever Custom Fields are available. The EXIF Summary/Detail works now of course. So this next obvious use of a flying box would be to display any Custom Fields, and if the fields are larger than the box, create a scroll bar to move up and down the information fields.

This is the simplest use of Custom Fields and a flying box. But there are of course different ways to treat this. For instance, Custom Fields can be associated with an image, or an album. In this case, the idea is the same. A flying box to present whatever Custom Fields are associated with the image, or album level.

Now, here is where it gets cool. The ability to read IPTC standards is there now. But I have seen mentioning of field sets for things like the Dublin Core. There is a more elegant and detailed field structure: CDWA (Categories for the Description of WOrks of Art, by Getty Images). All these standards, from IPTC to the Dublin Core, to the better CDWA, have categories, and sub categories. Being able to create these fields is staraightforward.

As I'd mentioned before, it would be really nice to have "templates" that could slide into G2 that would create these field standards. Instead of having to manually create them for each site. Irrespective of how the fields are created, what would finally break through how custom fields could be displayed is creating the ability to not just display all Custom Fields in a single box, but be able to display main categories, and make the sub categories 'clickable'. This way a large number of fields populated with data could be separated out so as to not clutter a single flying box. If you have ever gone onto sites, especially museum type sites, associated metadata is slammed into your face on one screen. It just plain, flat sucks. Here is a for instance:

here

Here is a photo, with the associated metadata. On one screen. This drives me nuts. It is fine for reseaarch, but cripes... this is jamming informtion down your throat on a single screen and it is just plain and simple, ineleegant. Lutz, I have to say, if nothing else, being able to take all the metadata (Custom Fields) and just create a flying box of a fixed size for width and length, that is scrollable, that contains this information, it would be SOOOOOOOO much easier to view the image which is what matters, and then be able to click on a small icon, like for the EXIF info now, and be able to view this metadata via a flying, scrollable box, over the image. It would be a huge improvement over the crummy way applications present metatdata now. Just that!!!

There is something else that continues to be missing from this scenario. A simple user. Let's say a photographer... they register onto a site and get an album that becomes their top level album. This artist has no way to create a bio, a vitae, and artist statement, an equipment statement, anything, without having to jump through hoops. Pedro created this fantastic ability to be able to populate the left side of an album with text and graphics. But you have to be an administrator to post anything. What is really missing is just the simple ability for a user to be able to enter (into Custom Fields maybe??), information like bio, like artists statement, like equipment, like whatever they want.... and then be able to call it up at the album level. I have long thought that creating Custom Fields for a user to fill in, so that they could be clickable icons, that would pull up these fields, like bio, like equipment, whatever, is a big missing link. To be able to do this via a flying box would be another big deal in my opinion. I know this is branching out a bit... but just allowing a user to go to the User Account where they deal with watermarks, change their password... just having some additional menu items so a user can enter a bio, equipment, artists statement, contact info... and then have an icon for each one available at the menu level, the album level, the image level, clickable... and have these text fields appear via a flying box... well, this would be huge.

Again this all goes back to how we enter a gallery, or a museum, or whatever. Our heads are up, eyes looking forward, and we see images first. Your theme is the first thing I have seen that, if it just does this one thing.... which is to call up all Custom Fields via flying box that overlays the image, with a scroll capability if there is more metadata than can fit in the box.... if that is all that can happen, this would be a huge improvement over all these crummy sites that force metadata onto the same screen. It is NOT how we view images or art in real life. Just this alone would be a big deal.

All this extra stuff I have typed I guess will be too much and confusing, but maybe not. Being able to create clickable sub catagories, and being able to give users the ability to create information about themselves which can also fly in at the album or image level, would also be a huge thing. In all my searching on a bazillion sites, I have not yet seen this kind of simple elegance. Your theme is the first time I have seen this possibility.

I've offered a server and bandwidth to help. What else besides babbling a lot, can I do to help to get you more infected? Your theme really is the first time I have seen this being a real possibility to help user experience the image first, which is how we act in real life, and be able to draw associated metadata into the frame, second. I could not be more psyched by this possibility. I simply do not see this kind of design focus in any application, anywhere. What can I do to help?

drhiii, that sounds really fascinating.

I've alrady looked up a script like the lightbox which is able to display any type of info in a popup, even html-pages.
This really opens a box of pandora...

Hello Lutz,

I know I typed a lot of text in the earlier reponse.... but having spent so much time looking at how images are presented via different applications, from photo sites to museums, it drives me nuts to see how the internet has created what I feel is the opposite of a real viewing experience. This is why your theme work really grabbed my attention. Finally! Something that has the opportunity of letting people experience images the way we do in real life. I know I've beat this horse, but this is how long I've been looking... hoping.

So when you say this really opens a Pandora's box, hey, you said it brother!

Just being able to pop up and float Custom Fields, allowing for a scroll bar if the data is more than the box can display, that alone would be huge.

Then the additional ideas of providing a registered user the ability to input data for bio, artist statement, equipment, whatever.... and then being able to call those invidual fields via a flying or floating box... well, this would be a big deal. Right now when a photographer looks at G2, they love everything about it, until they ask about how to post information about themselves. It breaks down because it is then not easy at all for a simple photographer to just put in a bio. It is a pain in the arse because eiher people squeeze info into Description Fields, but they have to do that for every Album and it just doesn't look right, or an administrator can to handle the data like for the .tpl data files in PGtheme or PGlightbox, and, well, it can be done, but it involves steps. I know that creating custom fields for things like bio, equipment, artist statement, must be done within the framework of G2, but what I am saying is IF this framework were possible, your theme being able to CALL these custom fields and fly them in - for things like bio, statement, equipment, whatever, calling individual Custom Fields would be soooooo much better for a registered user, and artist, it doesn't matter. This would provide an elegance that I have not seen before. Almost anywhere.

This last paragraph requires additional framework I know, but I get more people asking for this and they stop because they can't do the simplest thing like add a bio without jumping through hoops.

But like I said... just calling Custom Fields and flying them in would be fantastic. And as you said... this opens up a beautiful Pandora's box. This is how we view art, photos, even in books. Images first. The internet has forced people to experience this stuff in the exact opposite way. Your theme makes how we view things in real life possible.

If I had the skills, I would shut my mouth and write code that accomplishes this. But in lieu of that, how can I be of help to make any of this possible besides just opening my big mouth? I want to help...

regards, drhiii

To continue on the prior ideas above.... here is an example of a site that may appear to be interesting and elegant, but to me it contains some good elements and some really invasive, crummy elements:

http://garymercerphoto.smugmug.com/gallery/331250/1/58759985/Large

It is great that he can have a custom name and logo on the top. Cool. Maneuvering from image to image and some of the functions at the bottom is a no brainer. However, why in the world do I have to be slapped in the face with the text or statement above each picture? That is just not good. With your theme, I would say the artist could, should have a choice whether that text is staticly presented like it is now in hte above example, or could this information float or fly in and support the image instead of overwhelming it. Then, I as a user would like to be able to click on other icons or menu items that the artist has chosen to put in the screen... like a tiny icon to fly in their bio, or fly in comments about the image, or fly in Custom Fields that pertain to this particular image, or fly in elements that support either the artist, or the object. This method treats information as it should be... in a supporting role. What we see in the example is we have no choice... everything is slammed onto the screen and the image is now just a part of the experience. I as an artist would like to choose whether this stuff is slapped onto the screen on purpose, or wouldn't it be cool to select whether I have icons that fly in boxes for EXIF (summary and detailed which you have now!), an icon that flies in a box for a bio, an icon that flies in a box for comments, an icon that flies in a box for any custom field that I create.... I could go on.

This site above has some good and in my opinion, a lot bad elements... because my experience in sites like this is it is more about navigating and research than it is a real experience. The floating, flying boxes change dramatically how this can be done...

Ok, I will calm down now... a little. I just get real psyched to be able to write about this.

regards, drhiii

I know there are a lot of ideas.... but just the one, of a flying, scrolling box with custom fields, would be a big thing.

The rest of the ideas involve framework and detail I know. It takes work. I just don't have the skills to write them. All I know is the internet has grown up in a certain way and the way screens present information is just the way it is... but imagery is different. It unfortunately has followed the rest of how the internet presents information and in my opinion, this standard is really crummy. That's why I get all worked up because here is an opportunity to change how images are presented. The Digital Asset Managers are the worst (ContentDM, Mimsey, Portfolio8, etc), when they should be the best. Your theme, following Pedro's work, is the first I've seen that can actually do this, sitting on top of G2's framework.

I know this takes work. It can be really annoying to have someone sit back and just make comments like me.

Heh, and no, am not a politican. I just get real psyched when finally, something that could present images they way we view them in real life. What can I do to help?

Hello Floridave.

I would be glad to help. Going back over 3 years, I did offer help with documentation off and on, server space and bandwidth, but never got a response from anyone, so I stopped.

Yes, I would like to help...

Updated PGlightbox to 1.1.3 - including the flying Comments. To be able to see the comments flying, you'll need to add the
"Add Comment" Block to the Blocks to show on photo pages and activate the "BLOCKS :: Show a "Blocks" button on photo pages (when clicked Blocks selected to show: containing EXIF, Comments,etc, will be displayed)". This is needed for all flying comments - those on album pages aswell (as the album block is not (yet) hideable directly.

The changes neccessary to skip the Comment-Add Confirmation Page (not really usefull for the flying Add-Comments) are described at the Codex Page (see first post).

Hope you like it,
Lutz

Just upgraded my Gallery2 to the latest SVN (14650) and installed PGLightBox 1.1.3. I have 1.1.2 running on another installation and love it - but I can't get it to work on this newest G2 code. When I open an album using PGLightbox, I get "Error on page", no icons, a thumbnail for the one subalbum, and a white background with straight html text - no formatting. Don't know whether the problem lies in the G2 code, in the new PGLightbox code, or in something I've done.

How can I go about sorting this out? Anybody else having similar results?

Oops! Found a clue. Looks like a folder permissions problem. I unzipped and did not check the reults - from a permissions perspective, anyway. No read permission were granted to users.

The flying Comment box works perfectly. This makes the user experience in my opinion, so much more like we participate with images in other areas. Well done.

Hello

Thank you for your terrific work

I have a question about the paragraph below extracted from your setting page:

"Global Settings

There seems to be an issue with the non-standard themes and selecting options,
i.e. for the Imageblocks.
My workaround is to use a Standard Theme like Matrix as Default, switch the Root-Album to PGlightbox and inherit this theme to all albums below the root. This ensures the Siteadmin to run perfectly - as its still using a Standard-Theme. "

I am new to gallery2

Could you please direct me to the information or explain here how you can "switch the Root-Album to PGlightbox and inherit this theme to all albums"

in which menu can we do that.

is it under admin

thank you very much for your answer

villageidiot,

it easy to make - but a bit complicate dto explain ;)
- goto "Site Admin" and select "Defaults" from the "Themes" Menue-Entry.
Select "Matrix" as Default theme for your Gallery.
(your layout will switch to Matrix)
- goto your root-album (where your gallery home directory sits (eg. http://my.site/gallery2))
Select "Edit Album", goto the "Album" tab and set "PGlightbox" as "Choose a theme for this album. (The way the album is arranged on the page)" - don't
forget to check " Use this theme in all subalbums".
This way all albums will use PGlightbox - only the admin pages will switch to Matrix.
Hope this helps,
Lutz

Hello Lfrank

Thank you for your answer

1. Yes, I understand a little more how gallery2 works and i see what you mean for the root album.

2. I installed your pglightbox. nice

under microsoft explorer 6 and 7 for windows I get a javascript error:

(i always setup microsoft with "report all script errors on". it is a good way to debug and find missing variables declarations)

$canDisplaySlideshow is undefined

I will see if I can find the problem.

I check the javascripts scripts and they seem to be loaded correctly.

thank you again for your answer

Does anyone know how to remove or disable the Java Slideshow button permanently? I have all slideshow modules uninstalled and no slideshow options are active in the theme, but the button stubbornly refuses to go away. I can't find any code in the album/hoto.tpl that controls that button. I am using PGlightbox w/ gallery 2.2. Thanks!

Its on top of navigatorTop.tpl - just the lines

Where are the newest updates posted? I don't see them in the subversion browser. Am I missing something here?

Since this is a user contribution and part of the core package of Gallery 2, would that explain it?

I think the javascript error i get comes form the missing javascript below

/gallery/themes/PGlightbox/images/lb/js/builder.js
/gallery/themes/PGlightbox/images/lb/js/dragdrop.js
/gallery/themes/PGlightbox/images/lb/js/controls.js
/gallery/themes/PGlightbox/images/lb/js/slider.js

i do not see them in your distribution files. is it something we need to get somewhere else ?

thank you for your answer

@ultravista: it's not in SVN - you'll find it on the User Contribution Page or see first post .

@villageidiot: it was an unused variable defined in creating the previews for the slideshow, I fixed something yesterday but didn't upload yet.

Hi Lutz,

Would you happen to have any idea why NavigatorTop.tpl adds and extra "?" to the end of link URLs? For exmaple, this is what I see in my albums and photo pages:

http://andrewprokos.com/photos/new-york/?

When it should be http://andrewprokos.com/photos/new-york/

I am concerned that the extra ? will lead to those pages being double indexed. I didn't see anything in NavigatorTop that would cause that, so I'm wondering if the tpl is pulling it from someplace else? Thanks

I have a problem with the gallery:
whenever I apply the PGlightbox theme to my albums, whenever I click on an album to view the sub-album I am taken back to my root-album (Maxthon / IE6) or to the album I just was at.
Navigatioin works fine with other themes!
Any idea?

Strange - that's weird, all Lightbox enabled items fall back to the root ... what's your setting for dynamic albums in the theme admin. And you get render errors on the photopage for the Nav-Thumbs...
Would it be possible to get an admin login (PM) to check the settings (but earliest tomorrow morning... ;))

Hello,

After posting several lengthy comments, thought to lay low for a bit as that was a lot of info. That and finishing some tasks.

Any further thought towards flying "Custom Fields"?

Also, if you need server space and bandwidth (recall you mentioning that above), I can offer that to help. Anything that I can do within my abilities.

Am also getting to the IRC channel to hook up with people to see what I can do there...

Hope you like it,
Lutz

I'm getting the following errors whith IE 6. I've updated the "navigatorTop.tpl" but still getting the errors.

Error 1
Line: 44
Char: 0
Error: Object required
Code: 0

Error 2
Line: 28
Char: 1
Error: 'canDisplaySlideshow' is undefined
Code: 0

LFrank, I'll take the code you offered to villageidiot

On a side note, when runnng the PGLightbox theme, my Gallery runs into the ground. Pages sometimes timeout in IE as they are taking too long to load. We're talking 1-2 minutes IF the page loads.

Switching to the default "matrix" theme, the pages immediately respond and load time is a second or two.

Any ideas what would cause this? It's so bad I cannot use the theme.

@drhiii, I'm still putting some ideas together - but job and family took more than expected the last days ;)

@ultravista, the first error is still ther - and I have no idea why IE6 complains about including a style and accepts it
one line deeper in the code without hickup ... the other one is fixed. IE7 is totally quiet btw. - if you PM your eMail, I send you the latest files...
About the performance - I think this is inherited by PGtheme, the structure is too nested and would require a complete rewrite, Patrick found a workaround by only displaying one size and removing all resizes (for PGtheme) - might be an idea

This ia a great start! But, I have many questions.

I have set up PGLightbox as suggested @ the codex page. The default theme is matrix and then I set the top album to use PGLightbox and apply it to all subalbums. It works very well, and *most* of the features work properly.

Heres my info, first of all:

Gallery version = 2.2-svn core 1.1.18
PHP version = 5.1.6-1 apache2handler
Webserver = Apache/2.0.55 (Debian) PHP/5.1.6-1 mod_ssl/2.0.55 OpenSSL/0.9.8c
Database = mysql 5.0.24a-Debian_9-log, lock.system=flock
Toolkits = ArchiveUpload, Exif, Getid3, ImageMagick, SquareThumb, Thumbnail, Gd, LinkItemToolkit
Acceleration = none, none
Operating system = Linux dhcp94 2.6.8-2-386 #1 Tue Aug 16 12:46:35 UTC 2005 i686
Default theme = matrix
gettext = enabled
Locale = en_US
Browser = Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.0.7) Gecko/20060921 Ubuntu/dapper-security Firefox/1.5.0.7
Rows in GalleryAccessMap table = 36
Rows in GalleryAccessSubscriberMap table = 661
Rows in GalleryUser table = 5
Rows in GalleryItem table = 635
Rows in GalleryAlbumItem table = 34
Rows in GalleryCacheMap table = 0

Heres a link: http://gallery.guyforget.week4paug.net

Ok, the first thing is that when installed PGLightbox didnt select a colorpack. The codex page says to use PGsnow, which is what it seems to have defaulted to, but its not indicated in the theme options. I have left it as it was upon installation and all is working properly as far as I can tell. I would like to know what colorpack it is using, since none is selected.

Secondly, all options for sidebar items are gone. Such as - If you select to add an image block to your sidebar you usually have the choice of random images, updated images, updated galleries, etc, etc. These options are gone. So are the options for the 'show RSS items' and the option to remove the "Advanced Search" link, and all other options for the other sidebar items.

Third, in the theme's "styles" sections it says you can edit the style's colors, borders, etc, etc. It says the changes are "Implemented at "css.tpl"." Where is this file? I have made changes here and they are not implemented, and this file is nowhere, nor has it been created. I created my own blank file in the PGlightbox/templates/ directory but none of my changes ever got written to it, even when set at 777 permissions.

Also, when I try to change it to display the author info message to show on the top instead of the left, it doesnt move.

LFrank, I greatly appreciate your work on this theme, it really is great. I hope to see the bugs resolved when you have the time and to see it become even greater than it already is. For now I may go back to the straight up PGtheme but I really hope to see an updated release of this theme in the near future. Thanks for all of your hard work! If you need any more information from me please let me know.

guyforget: thanks for the perfect feedback - the lost options were already known the rest will be checked asap. If no colorpack is selected it falls back to the PGlightbox/images.

Lutz,

As villageidiot mentioned I am seeing missing files in my error logs:

/gallery/themes/PGlightbox/images/lb/js/builder.js
/gallery/themes/PGlightbox/images/lb/js/dragdrop.js
/gallery/themes/PGlightbox/images/lb/js/controls.js
/gallery/themes/PGlightbox/images/lb/js/slider.js

I saw you posted that these files aren't actually used by the theme...did you update the code? Also, does this theme have any issues with Internet explorer 6? I am having problems with sporadic periods of very long (10 second+) response times. My tech support guy told me that it seems that requests from IE6 browsers aren't being "closed" so that each page that is requested remains open on the server. If someone browses through 10,000 pages using IE6 then they all remain open at the same time and slow down the server. I never had this issue before so I am wondering if it may be an incompatinility with PGlighbox? Thanks

Andrew

Another thing Im noticing:

I set up Dynamic Albums as valiant instructed here. I used #2 to put an Updated album in my top level album. The problem is that lightbox tries to open this link as an item, and not as an album, and hence the lightbox window pops up and tries to load an image. There is no image, so it spins and spins and spins. The only way into the album is to click the "View Photo Page" link under the album's details. You can check it out at: http://gallery.guyforget.week4paug.net

@ Blue square
in the them.tpl file look for

 div dl#imap {
 display:block;
 border: 5px solid #0000ff;
 background-color: #00ff00;
 }

and alter.
I don't have it installed so can't really test.

Decided to give PGlighbox a whirl on one of my albums and find I have no lighbox effect :-(.
In my Apache error log I find the following:

File does not exist: /var/www/localhost/htdocs/gallery2/themes/PGlightbox/images/lb/js/builder.js
File does not exist: /var/www/localhost/htdocs/gallery2/themes/PGlightbox/images/lb/js/dragdrop.js
File does not exist: /var/www/localhost/htdocs/gallery2/themes/PGlightbox/images/lb/js/controls.js
File does not exist: /var/www/localhost/htdocs/gallery2/themes/PGlightbox/images/lb/js/slider.js

These files don't exist and are not in the PGlightbox-1.1.4.zip.
So am I missing something obvious here? Else, where do I fetch these files?

@Swordfish - these come from the lightbox-script, it has a line "(includes ? includes[1] : 'builder,effects,dragdrop,controls,slider')"
which seems to call these which arn't in the lightbox distro - but not needed in sricptaculous.js
except effects. I'll try to fix something
EDIT: Updated the scriptacluous.j to version 1.6.4 - this includes all files and bugfixes

@ichtiyous - the makers of the java slideshow reported some memory leaks on ie6, I'll update using their new script. Hope this helps.

For all who like to test the new files and the fixes above an updated 1.1.4 distro...

@LFrank,

Cool, the 1.1.4 Update is workin better now. Now my next issue...
When viewing my album all the thumbnails have a link like:
http://www.mydomain.com/gallery2/d/13618-3/DCP_3900.JPG

Which when clicking on thumbnails exits the Gallery and displays the image only in browser instead of the Photo page.
Clicking the "View Photo Page" icon beneath the thumbnails works fine (has the correct url).

My other Albums not using PGlightbox show links like
http://www.mydomain.com/blog/v/Soccer-2006/DCP_3900.JPG.html?g2_enterAlbum=0

Any idea how to fix this one? I'm using G2 with WPG2 plugin embedded in WordPress 2.0.4.

Thanks!

EDIT: ok, after flushing my cache (php/eaccelerator) things started working correctly. If I understand your implementation correctly, when clicking on a thumbnail the image displays using Lightbox effect, right? If so, then it seems to work in Firefox. However, clicking a thumbnail using IE6 does not work. Has some javascript error and the page basically freezes without displaying the photo.

If you need more info and/or some screenshots let me know.
